Uses of Sulfur

Sulfur has been used since ancient times in many different ways. Pagan priests originally used sulfur as incense or as a fumigant. It was also used as a medicine in its burned state. Later, Greeks and Romans started using sulfur to create fire and use it to make elaborate pyrotechnics. Sulfur was an important component in early gunpowder. In the 18th century sulfuric acid became a vital part of the latest manufacturing methods, making its demand ride high. In modern times sulfur is still used in manufacturing and is in a compound in most detergents and fungicides. Sulfur is contained in a variety of products as a compound, such as laxatives, bleach paper, and as a fruit preserver.
